The 10 best movie trailers of 2022 (so far)

Five stills: a man flying a fighter jet, a woman in a woven armor, a man in a hat and sunglasses holding his hands in front of him in a salute, a woman in a dark parking lot, a man in a pink hoodie looking skeptical

Nothing gets me more excited about a movie than a good trailer. The right music, the right visuals, the right dialogue, all tied together with the right editing? Chef's kiss.

2021 gave us a bumper crop of excellent trailers, and 2022 is already off to a roaring start. This year's best trailers are a versatile bunch: They've teased terrifying horror, sweet stop-motion, and blockbuster action. They've used songs from artists like Stevie Wonder, Beyoncé, and Charli XCX. They've made us laugh out loud and cover our eyes to escape some truly gnarly visuals. And they've all prompted us to re-watch them several times. Here, in no particular order, are the 10 best movie trailers of 2022 (so far).

1. Men

If there's one thing I love in trailers, it's repeating a noise over and over for dramatic effect (see: the siren in Rogue One). The teaser trailer for Alex Garland's Men takes a relatively innocuous noise — protagonist Harper (Jessie Buckley) playfully yelling into an abandoned tunnel, which echoes her voice back to her — and repeats it to chilling effect. Our sense of dread escalates as Harper's cry plays over and over, accompanying striking imagery of a figure stalking through a graveyard, an apple tree dropping all its fruit, and that damn tunnel. Truly, this teaser is nothing but vibes, but these vibes are spooky — and they make you want to watch.

How to watch: Men is available on digital Aug. 9.

2. The Menu

Speaking of repeating distressing sounds, let's talk about the teaser for The Menu. Harsh claps and cries of "Yes, chef!" underscore this trailer for a film about a rarefied dining experience with a dark twist. The threat of violence hovers in the atmosphere as gorgeous dishes get stabbed with tiny gold scissors or shattered by a spoon, and as the editing speeds up, we watch things go increasingly south through the eyes of an uneasy Anya Taylor-Joy, who is apparently on the foodie date from hell. Ralph Fiennes's sinister chef character looms large throughout, but it's Nicholas Hoult who gets the award for trailer MVP. His delivery of a ridiculous question at an inopportune time is a great way to relieve tension, and a perfect encapsulation of the film's satirical, horror-infused tone.

How to watch: The Menu hits theaters Nov. 18.

3. The Woman King

As a premise, "Viola Davis leads an army of women into battle" should be enough to sell you on Gina Prince-Bythewood's upcoming historical epic The Woman King. If you somehow weren't already convinced, the trailer, which introduces us to the all-female Agojie warriors and their leader General Nanisca (Davis), will win you over without a doubt. Badass training montages and battle scenes give us a formidable taste of just how powerful the Agojie are, while Nanisca's rousing speeches emphasize the urgency of the Agojie's fight against European colonizers. Pair all that with Beyoncé's "My Power," and you have a trailer that will make you want to swing a sword, hurl a spear, and join the fight.

How to watch: The Woman King hits theaters Sept. 16.

4. Crimes of the Future

"It is time to stop seeing" — unless you've watched the teaser for Crimes of the Future, in which case there's no way you can unsee the sights of David Cronenberg's latest foray into body horror. Between a weird skeleton chair, Viggo Mortensen undergoing surgery, and Earman, this teaser paints a truly gory, unsettling picture. The full trailer does get an honorable mention for Kristen Stewart saying "surgery is the new sex" and Léa Seydoux — how do I put this — making out with an open wound. But the teaser's atmosphere and sheer WTF factor push it over the edge.

How to watch: Crimes of the Future is now available for rental or purchase on AppleTV+, Youtube, Google Play, and more.

5. Marcel the Shell with Shoes On

The award for sweetest trailer of 2022 goes to Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, which re-introduces us to viral sensation Marcel the Shell (voiced by Jenny Slate and co-created by Slate and director Dean Fleischer-Camp). Few things are as charming as this trailer and its googly-eyed protagonist. Between adorable stop-motion and quietly hilarious dialogue, we learn about Marcel's journey to find his family — yes, I teared up watching. And you might too!

How to watch: Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is in limited theaters now, and will hit theaters nationwide July 15.

6. Top Gun: Maverick

This is how you do a blockbuster trailer, people! There's just enough dialogue to let us know what's happening, paired with a ton of kickass action. Of course, this trailer benefits from a nostalgia boost courtesy of Tom Cruise, references to Iceman and Goose, and a beach football scene that can only be an homage to Top Gun's beach volleyball showdown. But the real stars of the trailer are the high-flying plane sequences — which were all really filmed in the air! When Maverick and his fellow pilots pull gravity-defying moves, you feel as if you're right there with them. It's an adrenaline rush packed into two and a half minutes, and it will definitely make you excited to travel back into the danger zone.

How to watch: Top Gun: Maverick is now in theaters.

7. Nope

Following in the footsteps of the trailer for Jordan Peele's Us, which remixed Luniz's "I Got 5 On It" with a horror flair, the trailer for Peele's Nope wryly incorporates Stevie Wonder's "Fingertips (Part 2)." Early on, Keke Palmer's character Emerald dances to the classic tune. As things take a spooky turn, we hear Wonder repeatedly telling us to "say yeah," only to be hit with the film's title telling us the exact opposite: Nope. On top of the killer song choice, we get a taste of the scary surprises the film has in store: Horses running from an unknown enemy, inflatable wavy men collapsing in unison, and an encroaching UFO. Do we learn exactly what the movie is about? Nope. Are we excited to watch? Yep.

How to watch: Nope hits theaters July 22.

8. Bodies Bodies Bodies

In the perfectly edited trailer for A24's Bodies Bodies Bodies, Pete Davidson said the quiet part out loud: “Well, I just look like I fuck. You know what I mean? I look like I fuck.” Wielding this big diabolical energy, director Halina Reijn’s dark comedy kicked off with one hell of a trailer set to Charli XCX’s tailor-made ode to “Hot Girl” Summer. You’re introduced the most murderous millennial weekend away with stars Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Myha’la Herrold, Chase Sui Wonders, Rachel Sennott, Lee Pace, and Davidson, all of whose ability to balance their fear at being murdered and not being taken seriously, guys is the core of the film’s comedy. Yes, everyone is afraid of getting knifed. But also, like, feelings are not being appreciated, and the situation is, like, escalating, and people are just being toxic. — Shannon Connellan, UK Editor

How to watch: Bodies Bodies Bodies hits theaters Aug. 5.

9. Strange World

I'm a sucker for anything with a retro sci-fi feel, and Strange World's first teaser trailer delivers that in spades. It opens just like a mid-20th century adventure movie, with an old-timey announcer voice welcoming us to a world beyond our imagination. Not long after that, we're thrown into a wonderland of walking cliffs, airborne rivers of flying creatures, and a ton of tentacle monsters. It's enough to make your inner child squeal in awe and long to explore this Strange World.

How to watch: Strange World hits theaters Nov. 23.

10. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

It’s not often the trailer of a film outshines the actual film, but in the case of director Tom Gormican's The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, we can confirm it. This is one wild ride of an NSFW trailer, introducing a concept that immediately had people talking: Nicolas Cage playing Nicolas Cage. The set-up was perfectly convoluted: the iconic actor as a fictionalized version of himself, trying to find work, and ending up in a situation where he has to revisit every OTT character he’s played to help the government catch a bad guy. Watching Nick Cage scream his own name — “I’M NICK FUCKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII-WHOO!-IIING CAGE!” while BLACKPINK’s “Kill This Love” roars over the top is the stuff screen dreams are made of. The film would be a celebrity name-dropping marathon of dreams. But critics, Mashable’s Kristy Puchko included, agreed the film didn’t quite meet expectations.S.C.

How to watch: The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is now available for rental or purchase on AppleTV+, Youtube, Google Play, and more.
